WHERE DO GERMS HIDE? Germs hide everywhere in the air on our hands
on our desks on walls on door knobs on pencils Remind students: that when we touch things we get germs on our hands then we touch things these germs spread from object to object person to person (“Philip Martin ClipArt,” n.d)

HOW DO GERMS SPREAD? Washing our hands improperly or not at all
Coughing Sneezing A sneeze can travel 200 mph or as fast as an airplane or train. Sharing food or drinks Coming to school when we are sick (“How do we sneeze? Where do we sneeze?,” 10/17/08) (“Germ stoppers,” 1/16/07)

Explain to students: everyone gets sick sometimes. we can’t keep away from every germ all the time. A. Ask the following questions and have students raise their hand to answer: Can you remember a time when you were sick? Did you have a fever? Did you have the chills? Where you sweaty? Did you have a runny nose? a belly ache? B. Ask if anyone knows how he or she got sick. C. Ask students to name something they did to get better. Possible answers - saw a doctor took medicine stayed in bed drank liquids Explain further that there are ways in which we can prevent germs from spreading. Washing our hands is a very important way to keep germs from spreading. Explain when to wash hands After using bathroom When hands are dirty After petting animals After blowing or wiping your nose If you sneeze in your hands Before you eat Use slide picture (Wash Your Hands) to explain how to wash hands. BE A GERM STOPPER CONTROL COUGHS AND SNEEZES
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue Throw the tissue in a waste basket Wash your hands or use sanitizer If a tissue is not available Cough or sneeze into your sleeve Henry the Hand says: “Never sneeze into your hands!” Microsoft Clipart.(n.d.) Wash your hands Don’t cough in your hands Use your elbow to catch the sneeze Never put a finger in your eyes, mouth, or nose. Henry the Hand sings the Four-part trick. Remember: Wash hands often – Sing "Happy Birthday" while washing your hands to ensure that you've washed long enough. Keep your germs to yourself – Use a tissue or your sleeve when you sneeze or cough. Never share personal items like food or drinks. Stay at home when you are sick. (“William P. Sawyer, MD,” 2009)
