4 Summary: EoS: aims EoS: step by step EoS: chronology
EoS: geography – the Empire periphery? EoS: sources – Why these? EoS through Pinakes 3.0: a data modelling and structuring tool for cultural heritage. The model and its concepts The input interface The structure of data: some input samples Structuring the historical correspondence in a map Forthcoming tools within Pinakes 4th International Conference of the European Society for the History of Science. Barcelona, November 2010.

5 EoS: aims the prototype of a multitask data-base that takes into account evidence gathered from scientific correspondences so as to define and highlight the contents the networks and the ways of transmission of scientific information in the north-east periphery of early modern Europe. map the network of scientific networks pick-up from letters “quanta” of scientific information Follow the information flows on the network 4th International Conference of the European Society for the History of Science. Barcelona, November 2010

6 EoS: step by step 1. to build a “static” web collaborative infrastructure that will work as: a repository of letters an infrastructure with letters’ extrinsic information (sender, addressee, place of origin, place of destination, date); an infrastructure with letters’ internal information (people, books, instruments, manuscripts, maps, related letters, observations etc.); 2. to build a “dynamic” web collaborative infrastructure able to cross data so as to establish required relations between them; 3. to transfer these relations on a geographical map 4th International Conference of the European Society for the History of Science. Barcelona, November 2010

7 EoS : chronology EoS focuses on the age when «the accumulation of individual matter of facts, socially checked and shared, became the only undoubted foundation of a reformed philosophical knowledge of nature» (S. Shapin, The scientific revolution, 1996) 4th International Conference of the European Society for the History of Science. Barcelona, November 2010

8 EoS: geography As to space, it takes into account the geographical area included in the triangle Rome – Florence - Paris – Danzic, with special respect of the Mitteleuropa areas, that is Poland and the Habsburg Empire’s «periphery» (the yellow area).

9 EoS: the Empire periphery?
white space: “low intellectual density” (H. Bots) or lack of sources?
