Homecrest Presbyterian Church Worship of the Lord’s Day Reformation Sunday October 30th, 2016
2
Gathering Around the WORD Call To Worship
We have gathered today in search of reformation. We want to reform ourselves, our church, and our society. We stand fearless at the edge of change. For God is in the midst of us and we shall not be moved. Be still, and know that God is God. God is our rock and our redeemer.
3
Gathering Hymn # 275 “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”
A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing. Our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe. His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal.
4
Gathering Hymn # 275 “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”
Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right man on our side, the man of God's own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he. Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle.
5
Gathering Hymn # 275 “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us. The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him. His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure. One little word shall fell him.
6
Gathering Hymn # 275 “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”
That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth. The Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also. The body they may kill; God's truth abideth still. His kingdom is forever.
7
Gathering Around the WORD Call to Confession Even at our most faithful, we stand in need of grace. Because of God’s unfailing love, mercy is promised, even before we speak the truth. In humility and faith, let us confess our sin before God and our neighbors…honestly seeking God’s mercy and grace.
8
Gathering Around the WORD Prayer of Confession (in unison) Loving God, you promise that all who faithfully confess to you will be forgiven and preserved from trouble. Trusting in your mercy, we acknowledge the harm that we have done, and the good we have failed to do. Forgive us, we pray; guide us in your truth, and teach us the way that we should go, so that we may love and serve you well. In the name of Jesus the Christ we pray, Amen.
9
Gathering Around the WORD Declaration of Forgiveness Hear the good news: though you sins are like scarlet, they shall be like snow. For the Lord has promised to forgive all, and to surround with steadfast love everyone who trusts in God. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God, Amen.
10
Gathering Around the WORD Gloria Patri
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.
11
Gathering Around the WORD Passing of the Peace of Christ
Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” (John 14:27)
12
Proclaiming the WORD Message to the Youth/ Prayer of Illumination
13
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (2 Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11-12)
1Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: 2Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of everyone of you for one another is increasing. 4Therefore we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith during all your persecutions and the afflictions that you are enduring.
14
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (2 Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11-12)
11To this end we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of his call and will fulfill by his power every good resolve and work of faith, 12so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
15
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Luke 19:1-10)
1Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it. 2A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. 3He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. 4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way.
16
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Luke 19:1-10)
5When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today." 6So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. 7All who saw it began to grumble and said, "He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner." 8Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much."
17
Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Luke 19:1-10)
9Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. 10For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost."
18

Thou art the King of mercy and of grace, reigning omnipotent in every place: so come, O King, and our whole being sway; shine on us with the light of thy pure day.
21
Responding Hymn # 624 “I Greet Thee Who My Sure Redeemr Art”
Thou art the life, by which alone we live, and all our substance and our strength receive; sustain us by thy faith and by thy power, and give us strength in every trying hour.
22
Responding Hymn # 624 “I Greet Thee Who My Sure Redeemr Art”
Thou hast the true and perfect gentleness; no harshness hast thou and no bitterness. O grant to us the grace we find in thee, that we may dwell in perfect unity.
23
Responding Hymn # 624 “I Greet Thee Who My Sure Redeemr Art”
Our hope is in no other save in thee; our faith is built upon thy promise free; Lord, give us peace, and make us calm and sure, that in thy strength we evermore endure.

Responding to the WORD Affirmation of Faith- Excerpt of the French Confession of 1559 By: John Calvin We believe and confess only one God who can do all things, is all-wise, all-good, all just, and all-merciful. We believe that everything required for our salvation has been offered and communicated to us in Jesus Christ, the wisdom of God and God’s eternal Son. Jesus Christ clothed himself in our flesh: God and human in one person.

Responding to the WORD Affirmation of Faith- Excerpt of the French Confession of 1559 By: John Calvin We believe that we are illuminated in faith by the unfathomable grace of the Holy Spirit. God imparts this gracious gift. By faith we receive grace to live holy lives in awe and reverence for God, for we receive what the gospel promises when God gives us the Holy Spirit. Faith does not cool our desire for good and holy living, but rather engenders and excites it in us, leading naturally to good works.
