By: Marlon Rivas and Jacob G

2 Background Information
Sudan gained its independence from Britain in Unfortunately, soon afterwards Sudan became victim to multiple civil wars between its Arab-dominated north and non-Arab, Christian south.

3 Background Information (cont.)
The conflicts between north and south Sudan lasted throughout most of the 20th century, decimating a huge amount of the Sudanese population. These civil wars were a catalyst to the horrible violence that occurred in the Darfur region of Sudan.

4 Genocide in Darfur As rebellions rose in Darfur, the Sudanese government responded by beginning a genocidal campaign against civilians in the area.

5 People/Sides Involved
The two rebel movements that caused the Sudanese government to respond harshly were the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). The Arab militias used by the Sudanese government in response were the Janjaweed, or “devils on horseback”.

6 Sources of Conflict in Sudan
