4 Jonathan Edwards ( ) claim to fame is sermon “Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God” he was stern, passionate, brilliant, complicated grandfather was a powerful religious figure known as the “Pope of Connecticut Valley;” he was groomed to succeed his grandfather entered Yale in 1716 at 13 became his grandfather’s co-pastor in 1726 then took over 3 years later when his grandfather died started revival known as the “Great Awakening” in the 1730’s

preached “Sinners…” in Enfield, MA July 1741 known for his extremism; didn’t hesitate to accuse prominent church members of being sinners eventually lost support of his congregation; lost his position in 1750 8 years later he was named president of the College of New Jersey died 3 months after assuming his position
