Writing Style: Puritan Plain Style – straightforward, simple and direct writing which involves religious themes, theological ideas, and morals. Apostrophe – a figure of speech in which the poet addresses an absent person, an abstract idea, or a thing Inversion – Irregular sentence structure, such as: Placing an adjective after the noun it qualifies e.g. the soldier strong Placing a verb before its subject e.g. shouts the policeman Placing a noun before its preposition e.g. worlds between
