Adoption Update: Opening up Northern Forest Research Data
James Duncan, Mike Finnegan, Jennifer Pontius 9/16/2016
2
Ecosystem Monitoring Collaborator Network Data Archive, Access and Integration
We take this holistic ecosystem approach to monitoring changes in forest condition
3
With Many Disciplines, Many Contributors, Many Users…
Monitoring Research Because we are seeking to develop the clearest picture of change over time, we have to utilize all dat astreams – monitoring, research, and other sources. Allows us to capture a lot of Dark Data, but means an incredibly complex group of contributors and users
4
… Ownership, Access and Usability Are Critical
So that policy makers, land managers and researchers can utilize This made the adoption of RDA recommendations particularly attractive. Providing a way to cite and version data and enrich the metadata we’ve already developed, and doing it in a way that any dataset manager can access, will provide a lot of new power to users, and by extension to our community. Vermont Public Radio Vermont Audubon Society
5
Adoption Seed Funding Implement the Data Types Registry recommendations on top of existing attribute metadata system Implement the Dynamic Data Citation recommendations, a new development within our catalog.
6
Data Types Registry – Why We Need It
Discoverability and dataset traversal Semantic clarity and rigor Standardization Unit/Concept Definition Transformations Spelling More rigorous and nuanced than EML
7
Dynamic Citation - Why We Need It
Continually evolving datasets Some errors not caught till next field season Frequent reporting and publishing
8
Adoption Approach Pre-implementation Testing Implementation
Regional Data Ingest Workshops and Post-Implementation Testing
9
Adoption Overview Implement Data Types Registry Recommendation
Implement Dynamic Data Citation Recommendation Conduct pre and post implementation testing groups Outreach to present the benefits of the work to others
10
Implementation Challenges
Data Type Registry Generically address dimensionless concepts Limiting entries to avoid clutter Governance of the ENRICH DTR Dynamic Citation Result uniqueness and normalizing queries Re-creation of past versions, in terms of garbage collection and storage
11
Exciting Surprises But the best is yet to come…
Immediate new pathway to traverse datasets Recommendation work synergies Insights from other adopters Straight-forward, rapid integration with powerful knock-on results And even being here, seeing the myriad ways that the data citation recommendation could be extended into other technical patterns coming out of RDA is heartening, that our adoption doesn’t have to stop here But the best is yet to come…
12
Acknowledgments Adoption seed funding - MacArthur Foundation and the Research Data Alliance The US Forest Service State and Private Forestry program for core operational funding of the VMC Fran Berman, Yolanda Meleco and the other adopters who have been sharing their experiences. All the VMC cooperators that contribute
