3 Allocation of new grades
Broadly the same proportion of students will achieve grade 4 and above as currently achieve grade C and above. Grade 7 and above as currently achieve a grade A and above. Grade 5 will be positioned in the top third of the marks for a current grade C and the bottom third of the marks for a current grade B. Close to 20% of those awarded a grade 7 or above will be awarded a grade 9

4 New GCSEs More demanding in terms of content and knowledge
Will be graded using 1-9, with a few exceptions e.g. vocational courses 100% terminal examination with a few exceptions (Art, dance, PE , music) Where controlled assessment still exists it will be examined differently – less teacher assessment more external moderation and marking

5 New GCSEs Science – more complex content, more maths, no CA, replaced by a set number of practicals that will be examined Geography – greater use of maths and statistics, more UK geography, examined CA based on two pieces of fieldwork History – more historical periods, medieval, early modern, no CA MFL – more demanding content, most exam questions will be in the language being examined – translation, good understanding of grammar

6 New GCSEs Music – more critical appreciation, writing staff notation, chord symbols and analysing unfamiliar music, external marked CA Art – more focus on creativity and drawing, external marked CA Dance – more critical appreciation Drama – more on performance text and their historical, social and cultural context PE – more theoretical content, less emphasis on practical work Food – more emphasis on theory and food science RE – more understanding of religion itself, with student assessed on at least two religions
