Aims of ETERNUS Multi Path
Fujitsu Training Documentation Aims of ETERNUS Multi Path ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 Multipath management software provides path redundancy to enhance the reliability and system performance Failover / path redundancy This enables a path to take over the processing of the failed path without host access being stopped Improves the operation reliability of ETERNUS DX Optimized path selection With multipath configuration optimized path is automatically selected to access LUNs Depending on specifications of multipath software this function is not available ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017

Three Path Types of ETMP
Fujitsu Training Documentation Three Path Types of ETMP ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 There are three path types implemented on a per LUN basis Active path (optimized) Active path (non-optimized) Standby path / passive path Paths from an assigned controller that is the primary owner of LUNs and being used for I/O access Paths from a non-assigned controller that is the secondary owner of LUNs Paths in standby state These paths are powered and ready to operate Do not operate unless all active paths fail ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017

Multipath Functionality
Fujitsu Training Documentation Multipath Functionality ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 The picture shows a typical I/O Multipath configuration Vol-5 is mapped as LUN-1 to the server via two ETERNUS DX ports One on CM#0 and one on CM#1 The Multipath driver is able to pass the data via both physical lines to this particular Volume in the DX system In this configuration the Vol-1 is controlled by CM#0 The Multipath driver controls the utilization of the access paths These exemplary named MP drivers send data directly to the assigned CM path as long as this CM is fully functional ETERNUS Multipath Driver VMware vSphere® Multi Path Driver Data LUN-1 MP-Driver RAID-Group#0, assigned CM = CM0 RAID-Group#1 assigned CM = CM1 ETERNUS DX CM#0 CM#1 Vol-5 Vol-2 ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017

Multipath Failover in Relation to Path Types
Fujitsu Training Documentation Multipath Failover in Relation to Path Types ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 Assuming that the Host Response in the ETERNUS DX is set to "Active-Active / Preferred Path" The green LUN1 is assigned to CM#0 CA port of CM#0 is the optimized path CA port of CM#1 is the non-optimized path The blue LUN2 is assigned to CM#1 CA port of CM#1 is the optimized path CA port of CM#0 is the non-optimized path For both LUNs only the optimized path is being used However both paths are active but only for one LUN In case of a path failure the non-optimized path is used for I/O Application Server I/O request ETMPD *1 HBA#0 HBA#1 Active Path Standby Path Standby Path Active Path CM0-CA CM0-CA CM1-CA CM1-CA LUN1 *2 LUN2 *2 ETERNUS DX *1 ETERNUS Multi Path Daemon *2 The term LUN represents here a mapped volume ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017

ETERNUS Models and its Path Types
Fujitsu Training Documentation ETERNUS Models and its Path Types ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 The following assigned access path configurations are defined in the host response settings Active-Active / Preferred Path also named Active-Active (Asymmetric) Active-Active also named Active-Active (Symmetric) Each RAID Group has an assigned CM (owner of the RAID Group) that handles I/O to this RAID Group and its associated Volumes Model Fujitsu recommended Multipath Type DX60 S2 / DX80 S2 / DX90 S2 Active-Active (Asymmetric) ALUA storage DX60 S3 / DX100 S3 / DX 200 S3 DX60 S4 / DX100 S4 / DX 200 S4 DX410 S2 / DX440 S2 DX500 S3 / DX600 S3 DX8700 S2 Active-Active (Symmetric) DX8700 S3 / DX 8900 S3 ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017

ETMP within Windows® Environment
The ETERNUS Multipath Driver consists of the following elements Multipath Driver, which connects the storage system to a Windows server and contains path control functions Multipath Manager, a GUI that sets and monitors path connection status Multipath Service, a service function that monitors paths for errors and notifies Multipath Manager when a path error occurs The Windows® native MPIO service is activated during the installation and is needed by the ETMPD ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017

Supported HBA Connections (1)
All HBAs must be of the same topology type Example of a two path configuration Example of a four path configuration ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017

Supported HBA Connections (2)
Fujitsu Training Documentation Supported HBA Connections (2) ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 Example of a two path configuration With two independent server accesses Within a cluster configuration and concurrent physical server access In this case a cluster software is mandatory to control server access ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017

Unsupported HBA Connections
One CA port can be physically access two HBAs of the same server Zoning or different switches is/are mandatory to guaranty this rule Two HBAs of the same server can access two different CA ports but on the same CM (no controller redundancy) Example of a two path configuration ETMP ETERNUS DX S3 / S4 Copyright Fujitsu, Release June 2017
