6. A & P of the Kidneys Location Functions Two layers:
Two kidneys — one on each side of the lumbar region
Functions
Filter the blood and secrete water and nitrogenous wastes in the form of urine
Regulate the blood’s level of critical elements (water, sodium, potassium)
Two layers:
cortex — outer part (consists of one million nephrons)
medulla — inner portion of the kidney
Nephrons (the fx unit of the kidney) consists of:
glomerulus — ball-shaped cluster of capillaries
Bowman’s capsule — encloses the nephron
renal tubule — stem portion of the nephron

8. Ureters Location Function Two ureters — Tubes on each kidney
Carry urine from the kidney to the urinary bladder

9. Urinary Bladder
After the kidneys produce the urine, it is then stored in the bladder.

Holds the urine until it is expelled

10. Urethra Location Function Urethral Meatus
Single canal located under the urinary bladder
Function
Carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body
Urethral Meatus
Opening in the urethra to the outside of the body

11. Nephrolithiasis
Kidney stones or renal calculi are small "pebbles" of salt and mineral in the urine. The most common symptom is severe pain. Most stones pass on their own, but medical procedures are used to remove some kidney stones.
