1 Malcolm Lowe-Lauri Executive Director at CUHP
Our vision and future direction How will we get there? Malcolm Lowe-Lauri Executive Director at CUHP

2 Who are we? Cambridge University Health Partners was set up as a Limited Company in 2009 and was reaccredited in 2014 by the National Institute for Health Research for three years The Partners : the University of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust CUHP is one of six Academic Health Science Centres in England. Its mission is to improve patient healthcare by bringing together the NHS, industry and academia

3 Trouble is, that’s what the others say…
Oxford : The Centre will combine the institutions' individual strengths in world-class science, research, training and clinical expertise to address 21st century healthcare challenges.  King’s : King's Health Partners is an Academic Health Science Centre where world-class research, education and clinical practice are brought together for the benefit of patients Imperial : Our vision is to improve the quality of life of patients and populations by taking new research discoveries and translating them into new therapies as quickly as possible UCLP : UCLPartners is a unique academic health science partnership that brings together people and organisations to transform the health and wellbeing of the population. Manchester : MAHSC is becoming a major biomedical and health hub, providing clinical and research leadership and helping healthcare organisations to reap the benefits of research and innovation to drive improvements in care.

4 There is a different context for each
King’s : resolving the tensions between academic groups, clinical groups & hospitals UCLP : levelling up service quality & driving innovation across East London & Essex Imperial : resolving multiple site provision and weak neighbouring services in West London Oxford : Consolidating service & academic strengths, developing mental health, resolving the JR estate Manchester : bringing multiple academic, health & local authority institutions together in DevoManc

5 Our context : we have some of these challenges, but the opportunities are far greater

6 So in thinking about this there are Seven domains to consider for successful academic health science clusters Translation Focus Recognition for Quality Geo-economic Landscape Research Strength Financial Sustainability Governance and Strategy Workforce Sustainability While we are individually strong in many of these we are challenged in others.

7 So what questions are emerging for CUHP?
Discovery science in great shape, but could it interact a little more systematically with clinical land? Is there an opportunity to develop later stage translational research, especially with data? A contribution to learning for tomorrow’s health practitioners and the “unlearning” of today’s? Is there a key role in economic development for UK plc and what has to happen to drive that? What is the particular role for CUHP? Eg Governor? Integrator?

8 So, where next? An extensive internal and external consultation process Covering the Seven domains Taking into account our unique opportunities To determine the areas of focus for CUHP and how these should be addressed To land this at the CUHP Board meeting on 24th November Implementation - structure, process and people by February/March 2017

9 Thank you
