2 Fig. 1 Cluster analysis of individuals from the 4 attachment disorder items (see text): “definite lack of differentiation between adults,” “clear indication that the child would readily go off with a stranger,” “definite lack of checking back with the parent in anxiety-provoking situations,” “indicates distress but definite lack of seeking comfort.” Cluster 1 (n = 29) means (SD): 0.07 (0.26), 0.14 (0.35), 1.07 (0.53), and 0.45 (0.57) for the 4 items, respectively; cluster 2 (n = 52) means (SD): (0 on each of the 4 items); cluster 3 (n = 22) means (SD): 1.50 (0.51), 1.73 (0.46), 1.64 (0.58), and 0.50 (0.74) for the 4 items, respectively; cluster 4 (n = 38) means (SD): 1.18 (0.46), 0.66 (0.58), 0.37 (0.49), and 0.05 (0.23) for the 4 items, respectively. Significant (p <.05) mean differences between clusters were found on “definite lack of differentiation” (F3,137 = 174; clusters 3 and 4 > 1 and 2), “readily go off with a stranger” (F3,137 = 113; clusters 3 and 4 > 1 and 2), “definite lack of checking back” (F3,137 = 97; clusters 3 > 1 > 4 > 2), and “definite lack of seeking comfort” (F3,137 = 13; clusters 3 and 1 > 4 and 2).
