FOAM: Urethane or styrene. Easy to sand, turn and cut with or bandsaw hot wire. Glue with hotmelt or doublesided. Fill and paint with emulsion. You can only take material off. - CARD: use discarded boxes, but larger sheets can be bought. Easy to cut, shape and stick. - WIRE: steel weld rod is useful, but 5mm + is difficult to bend. Try copper wire from electrical flex. - TIMBER: slower to work than foam, but more durable and gives a better finish. Weak along the grain. - PLASTIC: can be machined, bent or formed. Available translucent so good for lighting. rigid materials beautiful – model making

BODYFILLER: two pack, easy sand paste (P38 or U-Pol). Sets in 5 mins. Strong. Takes paint well, but smells and is expensive. CLAY: nylon-reinforced, air-drying clays (DAS or Nuclay). Some shrinkage when drying. Slow to set, but working over an armature will help. GRP: messy, but very useful where strong, thin sections are needed. Sets quickly. Fumes are a problem. PAPER MACHE: cheap and strong, but takes a long time to dry. Translucent if tissue paper is used (good for lighting). soft materials beautiful – model making
