English-speaking world
Approximately 330 to 360 million people speak English as their first language. More than half of these (231 million) live in the United States, followed by some 55 million in England, the first place where English was spoken. English is the third largest language by number of native speakers, after Mandarin and Spanish. Estimates that include second language speakers vary greatly, from 470 million to more than 1 billion. David Crystal calculates that non- native speakers as of 2003 outnumbered native speakers by a ratio of 3 to 1. When combining native and non-native speakers, English is the most widely spoken language worldwide. Besides the major varieties of English, such as American English, British English, Indian English, Canadian English, Australian English, Irish English, New Zealand English and their sub-varieties, countries such as South Africa, the Philippines, Jamaica and Nigeria.

Sample Text in Australian English
I got up and put on my black daks. They are the most exy piece of my clobber as they’re my Dad’s last Chrissie prezzie. My Dad’s a bonzer bloke and I like him most of all my rellies. That’s cosI’ve got no Mum and my brother’s a bloody bludger and an ignorant ocker. We’ve never been matey with each other and I often get aggro with him. I had a nana and a sanger for brekkie and then took my ankle biters to the kindie. In the arvo I talked to my nibs about our new Kiwi bizzo partners, and I had a snag and a durry during the smoko. In the evo I dropped in to the shop to buy some tucker and grog for the barbie we’ll have on Sunday. It’s London to a brick that no one will bring anything, we’ve agreed it would be a BYO party though. I had a chook, some vedgies and amber for tea and then Shazza lobbed in. She looked beaut and in full feather, so she earbashed all night long. In the end I had to walk her to her unit, cos my car had gone cactus. When I was back I felt a bit crook, so I hit the sack right away.

India is the world's second-largest English speaking country
India is second only to the USA when it comes to speaking English with around 125 million people speaking the language, which is only 10% of our population. This is expected to grow by quite a margin in the coming years.

Standard English refers to any form of the English language considered by some people as the ideal use of language for educated native speakers. It encompasses grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and to some degree pronunciation. It is normally considered the "correct" written version of the language. Standard English is the English we use in grammar books and has nothing to do with accent (how we say something). Standard English is the grammar used by Americans, Canadians, Australians, British, Indians, Caribbeans etc.
