The Hundred Years’ War Summary
The Hundred Years’ War was a series of separate conflicts between England and France that spanned five generations. The war resulted in a strong division and rivalry between England and France as well as the decline of feudalism in Western Europe.

Causes of the War Conflict Over Flanders
Northeastern portion of France and parts of Belgium (present-day) Major manufacturing center of cloth from English wool (England depended heavily on this trade) Flanders had been under control of a French king, but the rising middle class of Flanders wanted their independence England supported the middle class France supported the king and powerful land owners

Causes of the War Continued
Control of France English kings controlled much of France since the 1000s The exact border between England and France was not well-established which led to conflict and war The English Channel & North Sea England needed the North Sea and English Channel for trade France’s security needed waterways and ships so that they could invade England if necessary Both sides started harassing the other for control

Consequences of the War
Feudalism suffered greatly Military power of the feudal knight was broken Knights preferred firearms rather than swords Many of the greatest lords died in this conflict, leading many serfs to leave feudalism for new towns. Kings tried to rebuild their nations with a strong economy that could support a national army England stopped trying to overtake France France gave tremendous power to their kings, which would eventually lead to the French Revolution in the 1790s
