Beyond Print: How to publish newsletters and eblasts
Using Freestyle editing you will not need to enter the edit ui to do the following: Select the stories to be included Dictate the order of the stories Rewrite and copyfit the headline and summary Edit the photo crops Push your changes live
3
Online: Configuration
1st step: add freestyle=1 to [MODULES] section of web version of the publicus.ini 2nd step: create a template. We will use newsletter_ovr.pbs for this example We will use the <pbs:freestyle> tag to call our content. ( You can also use <pbs:contentlist> or <pbs:newslist> tags.
4
Online: Configuration (cont.)
Available objects when using <pbs:freestyle> tag. For today we will be using FreestyleStoryList.pbo & FreestyleStoryItem.pbo. <%DivAttributes%> must be included in a div tag & <%DivDraggableClasses%> must be included in the class attribute inside a div tag on FreestyleStoryItem.pbo. FreestyleStoryArticleConnectionItem.pbo FreestyleStoryItem.pbo FreestyleStoryItemByline.pbo FreestyleStoryItemConnectionItem.pbo FreestyleStoryItemExternalLinkItem.pbo FreestyleStoryItemExternalLinks.pbo FreestyleStoryItemForumConnectionItem.pbo FreestyleStoryItemGalleryConnectionItem.pbo FreestyleStoryItemInternalLinks.pbo FreestyleStoryItemKeywordLinkItem.pbo FreestyleStoryItemKeywordLinks.pbo FreestyleStoryItemThemeLinkItem.pbo FreestyleStoryItemThemeLinks.pbo FreestyleStoryList.pbo

MWC/Content: Configuration
In Content Admin create a collection type, you can call it Freestyle. Let it contain articles Create rule should be (MWC Admin and MWC) Channel rule should be single channel. Date dependent = false. Browser preview = true Copy header text = true Copy preface text = true
6
MWC/Content: Configuration (cont.)
Allow picture cropping = true or false (will enable cropping support) Use empty positions - yes Range rule - You can choose either, but this is generally Fixed with candidates. Setup photo cropping (optional) Update MWP settings in Admin to include collection/freestyle positions. Update Admin settings so MWP will send story positions. Give users access to the collection in Content Admin. Restart MWP and Content.
7
MWC/Content: Using the collection
Assign articles to the collection positions. Select the collection and go to Work > Preview in browser. Rearrange the items by clicking and dragging. Copyfit the header text and the summary text within the browser. Clicking out of the box saves your changes. When you're happy with the changes, close the preview, select the collection again and hit the Publish button.
8
MWC/Content: Things to be aware of
You cannot publish the collection if any of the items are under edit, even if they've already been published. Once a story is linked to the collection, the only way to "reset" the headline and summary to match the story is to remove the link and link it again. (You can, of course, always edit the headline and summary manually.) The "click here for more link" will always be dead text when looking at the editable preview.
9
MWC/Content: Things to be aware of
It's best to edit/update the collection only in Content, as it can be confusing when moving back and forth between Content and edit UI. If you do want to edit the collection in Digital, hit the "revert to live" button to update the edit UI version to match what's currently published.
10
Online: Editing 3rd step: open NCS Digital Edit Interface
Navigate to Editorial dropdown and select “Freestyle Publishing” near the bottom. On the first visit you will need to create a "New Placement" with a Name, the url to the template you created that has the <%pbs:fressstyle%> tag, in this case it's /section/newsletter and the number of stories you want to be available (all stories don't have to be filled). Once you've created the placement you are able to edit the content as desired.
11
Online: Sending Your newsletter is now ready to be sent out, you are able to do this via 3rd Party or via NCS Digital Edit Interface Via 3rd Party, reference the URL, in this case it would be: Via Edit Interface navigate to “Editorial >> Newsletters” select “New Item” Create “New Template” and add: <newsl:getcontent url=" To the “HTML Template:” section Your now able to select a receiver group(s) and Provide a Newsletter Title and send your news letter.
