8 Reciprocal Reading Reminders
Summarize the text in your own words. Ask questions and seek clarification on words. Be a good partner and answer the questions and clarify words that are misunderstood. Make predictions about the text using what you already know and what you have learned. Listen carefully to the reader and do not interrupt. Respond to the discussion questions. Use the vocabulary words as you discuss.

Para 1: Why do the refugees call coming to America their “golden ticket”? What text/movie does this analogy make reference and why do you think the writer selected this comparison? Para 2 & 3: Why might the transition to America be tough for refugee children? Why would the refugees struggle to fit in with American children? Title & Para 4: What does the phrase “find their footing” mean? Para 4: What subject areas do you think, a curriculum tailored to the refugee’s unique needs, would look like? Why? Para 5: Why would the refugees expectations of America become a “rude awakening: once they make it to the United States? Para 5: Do you think it is fair to put refugee students in age appropriate classrooms with American children? If your response is no, discuss alternative educational experiences or settings that would benefit refugee students? Para 6: What does Luma mean when she says that soccer is a universal language? Para 7: Luma stated that she shared similar experiences of being an outsider and coming to America. Using the information for the article and the book, discuss the similarities and differences between Luma’s experiences and reasons with coming to America and the experiences and reasons of the refugees. Para 8: Why is there an influx of refugees from Syria coming to America?

Why is the phrase “find their footing” appropriate for the message that the writer is conveying? What was the author’s purpose for writing this text? Explain with textual evidence.

13 Written Response Task Using information from the article and from the text, respond to the following prompt using the R.A.C.E. Strategy: Identify and discuss three ways that refugee families struggle to transition to the American culture after leaving their country. In your response, you must include: A detailed description of how their experience in their native country is a barrier to their transition. Examples of how their experiences cause them to struggle in America. Evidence from the text and article to support your response to the prompt.
