1 Warm Up #3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juxLuo-sH6M
While viewing the video, create a definition for life and what characteristics all life have in common.

2 How do you know something is alive?
What does biology mean? Biology means the study of (-ology) life (bio-) and includes many branches. Biologists organize living things into kingdoms. There are currently Six kingdoms. Kingdom Example Archaebacteria Extremophile bacteria Eubacteria Typical bacteria Protista Seaweed, Amoeba, Slime Mold Fungi Yeast, Mushrooms Plantae Moss, Fern, Holly, Oak Tree Animalia Worms, Fish, Birds, Frogs, Humans.

3 The Language of Science - Handout
Complete assignment with a table partner. Raise your hand and show me your completed assignment so that I may check you off for completion. Glue/Tape assignment into notebook.

4 Is It Living? Activity Title this part of your notebook with the same title mentioned above “Is it living?” 2. Create a list numbered 1-20. 3. Answer the following question for each of the items in the back of the room: Is it living yes/no? Why do you state this item is living or not based on your definition from the video you watched.

5 Is It Living? – Wrap up Discuss with your partner to check and compare responses. Group discussion

6 Characteristics of life and life processes.
1. Organization (The Level of complexity) Organism Organ System Tissues Cells Molecules Atoms/Elements

7 Characteristics of life and life processes – cont.
b. All living things need six essential elements (atoms): Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Phosphorous, Sulfur, “CHNOPS”. c. All living things are made of cells. One-celled organism – Single celled Many-celled organism – Multicellular

8 8 Characteristics of life
Synthesis Transport Excretion Regulation Nutrition Growth Reproduction Respiration 8 Characteristics of life

9 STERNGRR Foldable -Activity
Include: Definition Picture Example 20 min.

10 Foldable

11 STERNGRR Foldable – Follow up
Complete assignment with a table partner. Raise your hand and show me your completed assignment so that I may check you off for completion. Glue/Tape assignment into notebook. 4. Discussion of topics.

12 “TO MAKE” How organisms build necessary molecules.
Synthesis “TO MAKE” How organisms build necessary molecules.

13 “TO MOVE” How organisms get what they need to their cells.
Transport “TO MOVE” How organisms get what they need to their cells.

14 How organisms get rid of their waste and balance their fluids.
Excretion How organisms get rid of their waste and balance their fluids.

15 Regulation How organisms control their body processes.
HOMEOSTASIS - maintain constant internal condition An adaptation is an inherited structure, behavior, or internal process that enables organisms to better survive an environment. Ex.: Gills on a fish

16 How organisms ingest and break down food.
Nutrition How organisms ingest and break down food.

17 Growth/Development Growth – to increase in size.
Increases the number of cells of a multicellular organism. Development – Change that taeks place in structure and function of an organism during its life cycle. Example: Embryo becomes a fetus.

18 How organisms make new individuals like themselves.
Reproduction How organisms make new individuals like themselves.

19 Respiration(Cellular)
How organisms get oxygen and release carbon dioxide to make usable energy.

20 Written Response #13 Using what you learned today write a paragraph telling me if a virus is living. Explain why or why not.

21 Written Response #14 What is the basic unit of life?
A group of cells that perform a similar function are known as a _______________. What are two reasons an organism needs energy? Label the following as an adaptation or a response to a stimulus. The hollow bones of a bird Jerking your hand away from a hot stove.
