Lets talk about Plastic
Once is not Enough Lets talk about Plastic
2
What are Plastics? & Advantages of Plastics
"Plastic" refers to different materials made from carbon (which is usually drawn from petroleum), used in anything from milk jugs to vinyl jackets. Advantages : Since plastics are lightweight and sturdy, they can be conveniently used to transport goods. plastics are corrosion- and chemical-resistant, they can be used in any climate and for storing chemicals such as ammonia and caustic materials. Food-grade plastics preserve the freshness and flavor of foods. They are cheaper
3
Lets face reality of Plastic –General disadvantages
Hard to reuse Decomposition Difficult to recycle Takes 500 to 1000 years to decompose Threat to animals Chemical hasards Toxic 100% recycling of plastic is impossible Many animals die due to consuming the plastic on roads Plastics are health hazards
4
Plastics & Health Hazards
In addition to creating safety problems during production, many chemical additives that give plastic products desirable performance properties also have negative environmental and human health effects People are exposed to these chemicals not only during manufacturing, but also by using plastic packages, because some chemicals migrate from the plastic packaging to the foods they contain. Examples of plastics contaminating food have been reported with most plastic types Exposure to harmful chemicals during manufacturing, leaching in the stored food items while using plastic packages or chewing of plastic teethers and toys by children are linked with severe adverse health outcomes such as cancers, birth defects, impaired immunity, endocrine disruption, developmental and reproductive effects etc. Most concerning is the effect phthalates have on reproductive health in males. Exposure in fetuses has been linked to the malformation of the male reproductive system. the adverse effects of BPA, such as reproductive cancers, obesity, type-2 diabetes and even autism, have been observed to be increasing in the human population in the past 50 years,

Plastic in Food !!!!!! Proper food storage is important to keeping it safe to eat. Eating food that has been improperly stored has the potential to make a person sick, particularly if that storage container is a plastic that contains dangerous chemicals. According to the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, grocery bags are made from high density polyethylene or low density polyethylene and are usually coded for recycling as a 2 or 4. When food is stored in plastic bags these chemicals can leach into the food and then be ingested. This also includes plastic wrap, which is made up of similar components, says the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy. Over time these chemicals have been linked to tissue changes, genetic damage, chromosomal errors, miscarriage, birth defects, early onset of puberty and hormonal changes. In children, chemical leaching can cause harm to their developing immune system and can result in disrupted hormones and behavioral problems.
6
Warm food on Plastic The plastic most commonly used in water and soda bottles can release antimony and bisphenol A (the dreaded BPA) if it’s exposed to heat over a long period of time. It is not a good idea to store bottled water in your car during hot summer under the sun. Similarly, it is not a good idea to store bottled water for long time Health issues : Harmone level changes Heart problems Risks of Cancer Stomach ulcers …. Same applies when hot food is served in Plastic containers , like hot tea in Plastic cups / hot food on plastic plates / warming food in microwave in plastic containers
7
Alternate to Plastic – Paper containers?
Paper comes from trees -- lots and lots of trees. We need lots of trees to make paper containers Paper cups are as well made of mixture of Plastic and Paper , to avoid leakage Lots of energy used for producing Paper Bags

Do we have a solution? Ofcourse we have a solution – REUSABLE CLOTH BAGS Cloth bags : Even the Clothes land in landfill if it is not reused, to avoid the landfill , the cloths can be made used for storage and shopping The clothes are very easy to reuse without any huge investments Many trendy bags can be stitched at home for free without any cost Easy washable Stainless Steel Vessels: As we are getting used to modern technology , we are forgetting old traditional values Stainless steel vessels are hygenic and long lasting

So Solution – For Shopping (free of cost)
Reuse gifted bags in Marriages Reuse the torn cloths for stitching reusable bags Old cloth bags for buying individual veggies
10
Solution – For Food storage
Stainless steel lunch boxes Stable stainless steel storage boxes or the bottles from Jam or other products can be reused Use stainless steel plates/tumblers instead of Plastic Tip: For storage of spices , Jam bottles can be reused . Any glass bottle with metallic cap

Tips & Tricks Try to avoid straws in restaurants by saying „No Straws“ ‚ while ordering refreshment drinks Try to buy vegetables from farmer market by avoiding packaged vegetables Try to buy milk in Bottles instead of Packets Try to give up Chewing gums –They are just rubber Try to segregate the dry waste and wet waste . Use compost bins and grow your own veggies Use bar soap instead of liquid hand soap. Keep your own reusable foodware at the office. I brought a plate, bowl, glass, and utensils to keep at my desk. This way, I can avoid all the disposable cups, plates, and cutlery in the lunchroom. Carry lunches in stainless containers or cloth bags.
