From: Implementing Internet-Based Aural Rehabilitation in a General Clinical Practice Am J Audiol. 2015;24(3): doi: /2015_AJA Legend: Flowchart for the general clinical practice trial (GCP-trial) procedure. Participants were randomly assigned to the intervention or the control group. The intervention group had access to a book about hearing and hearing loss (Elberling & Worsøe, 2006) and the Swedish version of Active Communication Education (ACE; Hickson, Worrall, & Scarinci, 2006, 2007; Öberg, Bohn, & Larsson, 2014). The intervention group received weekly home training assignments related to topic-based reading instructions. The assignments were submitted via Internet by the participants and were discussed with the audiologist by telephone at the end of each treatment week. The participants in the intervention group also attended a discussion forum at the trial website, where they discussed weekly topics with each other without any interaction with the audiologist. Each week ended with a five-question quiz. The control group had access only to parts of the book (Elberling & Worsøe, 2006) and was asked to read and evaluate its content. The questionnaires used: The Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly (HHIE; Ventry & Weinstein, 1982), the Communication Strategies Scale, the Communication Profile for the Hearing Impaired (Demorest & Erdman, 1987), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (Zigmond & Snaith, 1983), and the International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids (Cox et al., 2000).
