All Tri-Council (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR) disciplines will apply through the same competition $ / year for up to 3 years of doctoral study No citizenship restrictions Nominated by university where you will pursue PhD (different from NSERC PGS/CGS competition) Number of applications forwarded based on 3 year University Quota Focus on mobility and leadership

3 Vanier – How to Apply Timeline: To apply:
Speak with your Supervisor, Department or Faculty prior to seeking nomination Apply online via ResearchNet. Create and attach Canadian Common CV (CCV) Identify Participants and Referees Submit Official Transcripts to SGS July - Oct Applicants seek a nominating institution, prepare and submit application package. Students seeking nomination should speak with their department/faculty before beginning the process. October 01 October - November Internal deadline - submit completed application via ResearchNet Applicants selected for nomination will receive review/edits from SGS November 02 National deadline for Institutional Nominations March Results

4 Vanier – Application Changes
Changes to application for : Change #1: Combining the a) Description of Leadership and communication skills and b) Special Circumstances documents into a document entitled Personal Leadership Statement.  Change #2: Requesting an additional Leadership Reference letter. Contact references well in advance of UNB’s Internal Deadline

5 Vanier – Criteria Criteria:
Candidates are evaluated and selected on the basis of the following three criteria, which are weighted equally by the selection committees: academic excellence; research potential; and leadership (potential and demonstrated ability). Detailed information on CGS Vanier Selection Committee standards can be found online.

6 Vanier – Contact Us Vanier applicants who have consulted their supervisor, faculty and department are encouraged to meet with a Dean throughout the application process for tips and edits. 7 Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement (CGS-MSFSS)
Successful CGS applicants have access to foreign travel study supplements through the CGS MSFSS Scholarships. Up to $6,000 for 3-6 months 125 awards for SSHRC; 80 awards for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and 45 awards for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

8 Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement (CGS-MSFSS)
Candidates: Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada registered at an eligible Canadian Institution have accepted or hold a CGS (Masters or Doctoral) or Vanier CGS (if eligible) must not have accepted a previous CGS-MSFSS Applications: submitted through the University, within the quota allocation two calls per year, May/June & September/October Awards: recipients must hold an active CGS at start of award maximum value of $6,000 (covers travel, living and other non-research related costs) duration of 3 to 6 months start date must be after the application deadline and within one year of receiving notice of award
