15 Identifying Core Values
Directions for Activity: Read through the list on the following page and circle ten values which you feel are most important regarding highly capable learners.
Now, cross off five of those values, leaving you with the five that are most important.
Now, from your list of five values, cross off two, leaving you with the three values that are most important. These are most likely your core beliefs about highly capable learners.
 Kathleen

16 Reflection Activities
Notice the feelings that come up when you read your short list. How does your focus shift as you narrow down your list?
Consider how the mission of the Shoreline Highly Capable Program should reflect your core values. What actions do these values imply?
Write your three core values on a piece of paper and post them on the poster. Reflect on them until our next meeting. See if they still feel like “core” values. Complete “Developing a Highly Capable Mission Statement” Kathleen

17 Our Mission Shoreline’s Elementary Highly Capable (HiCap) Program provides an enriched and accelerated educational experience designed to meet the needs of gifted and talented students. The HiCap Program is a challenging self-contained academic setting, where students learn with depth and increased levels of complexity, in an environment with intellectual and interest group peers. The advanced pace of the curriculum allows for students to spend more time on projects and in-depth assignments, both as individuals and as members of cooperative learning groups.

18 Developing a Highly Capable Mission Statement
My core values relating to programs for highly capable learners are: My definition of a highly capable learner is: I’ll know our district HiCap program is effective when: Key concepts that should be included in the HiCap Program mission statement include:  Kathleen
