3 How did the Company Form?
In the 1660’s two French men named Radisson and Groseilliers explored to Hudson’s bay and discovered the land was rich with furs. They were able to bring a ship full of furs back. Radisson and Groseillers agreed merchants to in the fur trade. Then that resulted in the formation of the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1670.

4 Continued The King of England gave the company a fur trade monopoly for all the lands drained by rivers flowing into Hudson’s Bay but he didn’t actually own the land nor the country. The company built trading forts along Hudson’s Bay Company at many river mouths where sailing ships could be anchored. The British traders got easy access to the richest fur country of all through the deep-water ports as well as a good advantage over the French.

5 How did the Natives Change?
The Native People who lived close to posts changed the most. They trapped the animals for furs and also supplied the interior trading posts with food enough for the winter. This is crucial because many of the fur traders would have starved without their help.

6 Continued During the summer months, aboriginal people travelled to trading posts for metal tools, guns, foods, and textiles which are examples of manufactured goods. Because of the fur trade and involvement in it many Aboriginals left their lifestyles and economy. They depended on European manufactured goods and food for survival. Many also went past their traditional territory to hunt for fur-bearing animals and to acquire a better position in the fur trade.

7 Continued The moving of people and the competition for European goods led to struggle between the Aboriginals. The coming of Europeans also brought diseases which was a problem for the population of Aboriginals. After the merge between the Hudson’s Bay Company and the North West Company the HBC closed many unprofitable trading posts. This had an adverse effect on Aboriginal groups making them have less reliability on the fur trade in order to survive.
