1 DETAILS Nonfiction Reading

2 Details defined: Important pieces of information that together make a main idea, point or concept. In reading, details make up most of a paragraph as they support the main idea.

3 READING CATEGORIES OF DETAILS
FACTS: pieces of information that can be proven. 2. CLUES: pieces of information that must be put together in a logical order or sequence to lead to an inference- prediction, conclusion or other type of assumption.

4 Within each category of DETAILS there are 2 types that are in paragraphs:
Major Details: most important details which are necessary in supporting the main idea. B. Minor Details:give interesting information but are not absolutely necessary to support main idea.

5 STRATEGIES for LOCATING DETAILS
1. SCANNING A. quick way of locating specific information B. you have an idea of what you are looking for C. it is not reading for meaning

6 PRACTICE this strategy to improve
SCANNING D. Steps to Scanning: 1. Recognize organization of item to be scanned 2. Develop key word(s) to help you recognize what you are looking for 3. Moves eyes rapidly (left to right) throughout the paragraph in search of key word(s) 4. Stop at key word(s)- read material around it. Decide if this is the information you need. PRACTICE this strategy to improve

2. RECALL STRATEGY Use memory. In order to recall information, you must understand it learn it then connect it in your mind with something that you already know B. Need to practice using recall strategy

3.Re-READING STRATEGY If at first you don’t understand---read, read again! Re-reading is a very important strategy for clarifying and understanding both fiction and nonfiction readings. The best readers use this strategy.
