1 National Report of Japan
SCAR SCAGI National Report of Japan Recent activity on geographical information of Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) by Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI) National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) Koichiro Doi (NIPR)

2 Contents Mapping Activities (GSI) Accurate topographic survey
Updating topographic information Geospatial information (GSI) High resolution DEM by UAV-SfM photogrammetry (NIPR) Place name (NIPR, GSI)

3 Ongul Islands Main part of Syowa Station

4 Mapping Activities (GSI) 1. Accurate topographic survey
Terrestrial laser scanner survey was carried out in Syowa Station in January 2016.

5 An example of results of terrestrial laser scanner survey in 2013
Survey of a building in Syowa Station Obtained texture image

6 2. Simple aerial photography (3 Feb. 2016)
S17 route on ice East and West Ongul Island AS350

7 Table. Details of aerial photography in 2016
Area East and West Ongul Island S17 route on ice Flight date Feb. 3, 2016 Flight height 2,600ft (792m) Ground resolution 14.8cm Number of course 21 courses 8 courses Number of photograph 429 sheets 238 sheets Camera(Lens) Canon EOS MarkⅡ(35mm single focus lens) Number of persons 3 persons (Photographer, Navigator, Recorder)

8 3.Updating topographic information
1. Large-scale topographic information 1:2500 topographic map of Syowa Station was updated using results of aerial photographs taken on-site and terrestrial laser survey data. 2. Small-scale topographic information 1:50000 topographic maps of Belgeca Mountains and Yamato Mountains area, and 1: satellite image maps of Prince Olav and Mizuho Plateau are updated using ALOS/PRISM, AVNIR2 images and GCP data.

9 Geospatial information
The website below is to release results of geodetic survey, aerial photographs and maps that GSI has been organizing with Antarctic exploration project.

10 High resolution DEM by UAV-SfM photogrammetry (NIPR)
Unmanned aerial vehicle-based “structure from motion” (UAV-SfM) photogrammetry To obtain geomorphological data for the reconstruction of the past Antarctic ice sheet change and for understanding landform evolution process under hyper-arid and hypothermal environment. Pilot study sites: Central Dronning Maud Land and the Soya Coast in East Antarctica (Suganuma et al. 2016)

11 Examples of DEMs Vassdalen (central Dronning Maud Land)
Tellen (Soya Coast)

12 Place name (NIPR, GSI) 28 place names were newly approved in June 2014 by Antarctic place name committee for NIPR and the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition Headquarters. Plan of revision of “Gazetteer of eastern Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica” published in 2000.

13 Publishing plan of new “Antarctica Japanese Gazetteer”
After publication of “Gazetteer of eastern Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica” (2000), 16 years have passed. This period, addition of new place names, change in the coordinate system, and change in the place name notation of the Roman alphabet have occurred. Therefore National Institute of Polar Research (Japan) will schedule the publication of new “Antarctic Japanese Gazetteer” by March, The feature of new gazetteer is as follows: Addition of new place names approved by Japanese Antarctic Place-Names Committee and SCAR-SCAGI after March, 2000. Description of latitude and longitude for all place names on “ITRF coordinate system” changed from “Tokyo datum.” The Roman alphabet transcription of all Japanese place names on the recent average “Hepburn romanization system” changed from the old-fashioned “Kunrei romanization system.” “Gazetteer of eastern Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica”, compiled and edited by K. Moriwaki. 1st ed., 225p., March 2000.
