1 Unit 0 Practices in Science

2 Day 1 Measuring with non-Traditional tools

3 Bell Ringer Tuesday What are two things we can measure about the object on the teacher’s desk? What are three tools that we use to measure things?

4 Activity #1: Measuring Tools
Purpose: Measuring with non-traditional measuring devices What is Length? How should length be measured? Measure in Straight lines Labeled with proper units (Ex: 5 pencils, 6 dogs…) Work in groups of 2 1 person measures 1 person records measurement (Remember to switch jobs after each measurement!)

5 Post-Activity Discussion
Is it possible to communicate your measurements with students in other groups? (What would you need to tell them?) How many paperclips long was your desk? Why do we all have different answers? What did you do when the measurement did not come out to be a whole number? What steps could we take in order to ensure we all got the same measurement? Do all countries use the same measurements?

6 Standard Measurement When measuring anything you must have a universal standard to compare to… The Foot: originally based on the body part The Meter: there used to be a metal bar that had two lines scratched in it. That used to be “One Meter” The Kilogram: there is a piece of metal in a building in Paris that is “One Kilogram”
