Process Skills 3. Observations
2
3. Scientists are inquisitive and wondering as they use their senses and measuring tools in their work. Using your five senses and measuring tools to learn about the world around you is called OBSERVATION.

A. Many people think it’s just using your eyes, but that’s not true

B. There are two kinds of observations you can make. QUANTITATIVE observations can be measured or described using numbers. To make this kind of observation, you use measuring tools like rulers, scales, or thermometers. Sometimes you have to count, too.

C. Once we make observations, our brain puts them together into logical conclusions. These conclusions are called INFERENCES. To make an inference, you use what you see and what you know from your own personal experiences or knowledge to make a conclusion that makes sense.
9
Here are some observations. What would be some appropriate inferences?
1. You observe the sky at noon is darkening. 2. The principal interrupts class and calls for a student to come to her office. 3. All middle school students are bringing a lunch from home on Friday. 4. The classroom lights are off. 5. You leave the movie theater and see that the ground is wet. 6. Everyone in the mini theater is raising their hands.

Observe the following pictures
Make inferences based on your observations

Mystery Box Activity Without peeking, see if you can determine what is in the box. Use your observations skills (listen) and infer what is inside the box.
