Acute – short course. Recovery usually complete (fracture) Chronic – long course. Problem controlled not cured. (paralysis)

4 Rehabilitation Focus on: Improving the person’s ability to function
Promoting the best possible quality of life for the person Preventing further loss of function

5 Common Health Problems Requiring Rehab
Amputation Birth Defects Brain tumors Burns Cerebral Palsy Fractures Head injury Spinal cord injury Stroke

6 Restorative Nursing Care that helps regain strength, health, independence Focuses on: The whole person Preventing unnecessary decline in function Helping maintain the highest level of function May be combined with rehab

7 Restorative Aides Nursing assistant with special training to help with restorative care. Should be patient and kind Must have good communication skills positive attitude excellent work ethic

8 Physical Aspects Rehab begins when person first seeks health care
Complications are prevented: Contractures Decubitus Ulcers Bowel/bladder problems
