ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic hormone)
Subham Guha
2
Facts about ACTH Made in the pituitary gland and travel through bloodstream to adrenal glands Tissue: Adrenal cortex Chemical class: Peptide Stimulates adrenal cortex to secrete glucocorticoids Regulated by glucocorticoids and hypothalamic hormones
3
Role of ACTH Hypothalmus secretes releasing hormone to trigger pitutary for ACTH Travels down adrenal cortex to release cortisol to stimulate body cells to increase energy production Cortisol- maintains body stress
4
Hypo/Hyper Secretion Hyper: Excess growth of pituitary gland creates Cushing’s disease Obesity, slow growth rate, red face Hypo: Reduced stress response and skin depigmentation Addision’s disease: adrenal glands produce less hormones
5
Analogy A heater is like ACTH. It helps regulate the room temperature. If the room is cold, the heater turns on to warm the house.
