6 UCAS Applications - The Facts
This is a formal application There are 4000 characters and 47 lines limit Paragraphs are important Write it in Word and then cut and paste into Apply (UCAS Application System) Spelling, punctuation and grammar need to be perfect Plagiarism Detection System – they will know!!

7 UCAS Applications - Dos and Don’ts
Avoid over used clichés - ‘I have a thirst for knowledge…’ Avoid random lists e.g. books you’ve read, positions you’ve held…it’s not what you’ve done, it’s what you think about or learned from it that counts Don’t make sweeping statements without providing specific examples – ‘my experiences are vast…’ Don’t over use ‘passion’ or ‘passionate’ - demonstrate this through your examples Don’t pitch to a particular university

Do discuss relevant skills, experience and achievements Consider using the ‘STAR’ technique when providing examples Do demonstrate an insight into your chosen profession e.g. recent developments in the Government Policy Do demonstrate a clear sense of purpose – career aims and objectives

1) How many nursing vacancies were advertised in 2016? 2) Which roles come under the heading ‘Allied Health Professionals’ 3) What percentage of Adult Nursing students were in work, 6 months after graduating?

12 Answers – Health Quiz How many nursing and midwifery vacancies were advertised in 2016? 6,673 (source:Labour Insight ©Burning Glass Technologies - vacancies advertised online) The majority of nurses work for the NHS. Nurses are also employed by social care providers and can work in other settings such as prisons, schools, general practice 2) Which roles come under the heading ‘Allied Health Professionals’ Examples include - Art Therapist, Dietitian, Occupational Therapist, Paramedic, Physiotherapist There are over 300 job roles across the NHS – see the NHS Health Careers website ( 3) What percentage of Adult Nursing students were in work, 6 months after graduating? Nearly 100% of graduates from Northumbria University’s Adult Nursing Programme were working as nursing or midwifery professionals within 6 months of graduating (Unistats, 2017)

Entry requirements differ by trust but in general employers ask for: a good standard of general education, for example GCSEs (A-C) including English and maths and relevant paid or voluntary experience in a hospital, or with families and young children in a health or social care setting - (National Careers Service website)
