DIALOGUE Dialogue between Jacob and other men shows his perception of masculinity shifts throughout the book. In the beginning, Jacob thinks that masculinity is based around having sex, drinking, and who is the toughest guy. Starts to develop own view of masculinity.
13
Flash forward Shows his attitude as an old man versus being in his twenties. Puts a lot of emphasis on sex and masculinity as a young man. This helps us see his development as man because we can easily contrast his young self with his old self.
14
Symbolism Jacobās virginity is a symbol relating to his masculinity.
Feels as though he is less of a man. It follows him around which makes him more insecure around other men.
15
photos Photos shown at the beginning of each chapter displays the masculinity within the era of these circus shows. They display physical labor and a high-testosterone environment. The era of the Great Depression, men were expected to do hard labor to contribute for their families. Masculinity was important to them because it supplied them with income for their loved ones.
