4 Contents CIO priorities: Traditional IT and digital transformation
Trends in the traditional IT The role of NRENs can change accordingly Digital transformation in Higher Education Possible roles for NRENs in the digital future Conclusions

5 Dichotomy of IT Traditional IT
Corporate centrally managed environments Data centres Self-controlled applications Data warehouses Firewall strongholds Integration Focus on cost/procurement IT as an engine room Digital transformation Cloud Mobility Consumerization, BYOD Social media Big data Cyber security threats Internet of Things, Pervasive IT AND all legacy stuff Both worlds need to be managed at the same time with the same resources

6 The evolution of traditional IT – how the role will change
Today Future IT as service provider IT as core activity IT as service provider IT as core activity Externally focused Externally focused Focus Focus IT as engine room Everyone’s IT IT as engine room Everyone’s IT Internally focused Internally focused Operational Transformational Operational Transformational Orientation Orientation Adapted from: Four Futures for IT, Gartner (November 2012)

7 Traditional IT – where NRENs can help
Basic infrastructure related work and technology can be outsourced (to NRENs and others) to enable focus shift towards university specific work It is critical to understand who the customers are: academics, students, research institutes – the transition needs to be managed accordingly IT as service provider IT as core activity Externally focused IT as engine room Everyone’s IT Cyber security is primarily related to the networks, NRENs can provide professional services (e.g. pen tests) and continuous services (e.g. intrusion detection/prevention) Personal productivity improvement requires a number of generic services, NRENs can provide solutions that take into account all privacy and legal concerns Internally focused Operational Transformational Orientation

8 Digital transformation: different options for different institutions

9 What is the role of NRENs in the digital transformation
External Internal Core Business model disruptions MOOCs with both commercial and not-for-profit approaches Communities built around tools and educational interests Open content, such as governmental and EU initiatives Digital student experience Student portal Student recruitment with social media Digital education On-line learning, flipped classroom, blended learning Learning analytics, predictive interception Digital research Research data management Digital research project support Easy-to-use high performance computing Digital processes Process automation and self-service Integration support Enablers Experimentation & agility Mobility support Innovation partner Tool provider for new ICT Implementation partner Safeguard for cyber security Different options in different countries? Workhorse for basic ICT Infrastructure partner

10 Conclusions Higher Education IT is in a state of change
Traditional IT turns into digital research and education NRENs have an established role in traditional HE IT The role this will evolve incrementally New directions include increased responsibility in cyber security and in operating the infrastructure The role of NRENs (and that of IT) is yet to be seen in digital transformation Possibilities range from safeguarding the old to being in the forefront of the new (or both)
