7. Volcanic ejecta’s most valuable contribution to civilization is its natural cementitious qualities. It was used to build an empire. The Romans have since faded into history, but the ancient concrete monuments, aqueducts, roads, cisterns and bath houses they left behind – now more than 2000 years old – bear solemn witness to the extreme durability of natural pozzolan based concrete. Modern engineers now want to do the same!

Our modern infrastructure begins to crumble within a decade or less. Until very recently - except for massive dam projects where permanence was very important – most modern concrete did not have the benefit of natural pozzolan to instill durability into the concrete and allow for 50 to 100 year designed life-spans. With a renewed environmental emphasis on saving resources, resilience and durability are now being demanded of our engineers and the infrastructure they design. Natural pozzolan comes to the rescue! There are currently only 3 operating natural pozzolan mines in the western United States. More are needed to meet demand for durable concrete.

9. Natural pozzolan, unlike cement, does not need calcination or firing to activate its cementitious qualities. Thus, when cement is replaced by up to 40% raw natural pozzolan, the benefits to society are legion. Among them: #1. The concrete will last many decades, if not hundreds of years; #2. For every pound of cement produced, 1 lb of carbon is released into the atmosphere; thus, for every pound of cement replaced with natural pozzolan, 1 lb of carbon remains naturally sequestered in limestone; #3. Concrete made with natural pozzolan mitigates chemical attack thus protecting structural integrity and the public safety; #4. The concrete is fortified, densified and strengthened, thus requiring less materials to achieve design requirements.

13. Environmental Summary
Natural Pozzolan is beneficial to the health and safety of citizens and the environment, as follows:
By protecting concrete from chemical attack, the natural pozzolan allows for highly durable, resilient & high strength concrete. Vast material and financial resources will be saved by way of structures that will last for many decades or even centuries, unlike modern concretes without pozzolan.
Whereas the production of cement is one of the greatest contributors of greenhouse gases, any reduction in the use of cement will have a significant effect on the carbon footprint. KMC natural pozzolan can replace cement by up to 40% in a concrete mix design. That represents a lb for lb reduction in greenhouse gas.
The infrastructure that drives our economy is built on concrete. Higher quality concrete will help full the economy in the decades to come. Concrete, fortified by KMC natural pozzolan, will allow for safe, economical, and long-lasting highways, bridges, airports, and all manner of structures.

14. Economic Impact Summary
The KMC mine will bring a variety of direct and indirect economic benefits to the local community and the entire state of AZ.
As the only commercial natural pozzolan mine in AZ, the entire state will derive economic benefit from a high quality natural resource that will enhance the state’s roads, bridges, and other concrete infrastructure.
Mining jobs are good jobs. The economic benefits to the Kirkland area will include heavy equipment operators, quality control personnel, transportation specialists, and many other derivative jobs.

15. Natural pozzolan is a critical resource for the concrete infrastructure/construction industry. Without it, & lacking availability of artificial pozzolans, our concrete will continue to succumb to the ravages of time, chemical attack, and a porous matrix. State DOTs are now mandating pozzolans in public infrastructure. KMC natural pozzolans will help to fill a pronounced gap in pozzolan supply.
