Lincolns Assassination
Lincoln did not live to see the end of slavery John Wilkes Booth crept into the balcony where Lincoln and his wife were seated to watch a play Shot Lincoln in the back of the head and jumped from the balcony and broke his leg but still escaped Booth was found and killed a few days later

Reconstruction Begins
Reconstruction- process of admitting the confederate states back into the union. Freedmen's Bureau- federal agency set up schools and hospitals for former slaves also distributed clothes food and fuel. Andrew Johnson- Democrat opposite of Lincoln. Offered amnesty or pardon to most white southerners.

Rebuilding brings conflict
South put in laws to limit freedoms of former slaves called black codes. Congress did not think the southern states were ready to be represented in congress. Radical Republicans tried to get the south to eliminate the black codes and make the south more like the north.

Civil Rights act Civil Rights Act of 1866, makes all people born in America citizens. (Except Native Americans) 14 Amendment Johnson vetoed the law and then congress voted to override the veto. Both houses have to have 2/3 votes to override the veto.

Fifteenth Amendment 15th amendment- People can vote no matter race, color or previous servitude.

Johnson Impeached Johnson gets impeached as president for violating a law. Tenure of Office Act- prohibits president from firing government employees without senate approval. Goes on trial and does not get removed from office by one vote.

Grant as President & the Ku Klux Klan
Grant wins the presidency with the help of the Freedmen's vote. He then urged Congress to pass the Klan Act, bill to punish members of the Ku Klux Klan. Ku Klux Klan- group who tried to restore Democratic power of the south and keep former slaves powerless.
