Apprenticeship and traineeships
A growing range of opportunities Students need to be work ready. A traineeship can help get a student to be work ready The application process is in the Spring term Essential to book an appointment with our careers advisor Amanda Carroll if interested A growing range of opportunities. Government aims to create 3 million apprenticeships by 2020 An apprenticeship is, first and foremost a job, that includes training and employers therefore want students to be work ready. A traineeship can be a good way to build up the skills required to get an apprenticeship. No pay for a traineeship. Application process in Spring term Strongly recommend students book an appointment with Amanda Carroll our careers adviser if interested Amanda is in school on Wednesday’s and students can book appointments by ing her or through the form tutor or school base. Deciding where to study
It has to be the student’s choice Decide on the course first, then think about where to study it Attend Open Evenings Check the college and course entry requirements Have a back up plan Parents take a moment to think back to when you were at school. I know for some of you this may have been a long time ago… Thinking about their future can be a daunting prospect for many students. It has to be the students choice – parents can listen, support, encourage through the process. Decide on the course first – be open minded about where you might study it. Attend Open evenings – have a plan for each one you attend to make sure you get your questions answered. Go back a second time if necessary. Don’t just visit one college. Every course states its entry requirement in the prospectus. It is important when applying you think you can achieve those grades. To give you an example, A-Level Geography at Varndean requires a grade 4 in maths and Science in addition to meeting the college entry requirements. BHASVIC requires 4 in English and Science. It is also really worth having a backup plan. It relieves some of the pressure and therefore the stress to know what you’ll do if you don’t make the grades. It’s better not to leave it until results day as places will be in short supply.

Useful websites UCAS website. National Careers Service website.
Gov.uk apprenticeships website. Looking ahead the UCAS website provides information about A-Level requirements for specific degree courses. It’s good to check that the A-Levels you are choosing won’t close doors for University options. The National careers website provides information about how to find a job, job profiles, entry requirements for different careers and tools to help write CV’s and personal statements The Gov.uk apprenticeships website provides information about current apprenticeship vacancies nationally
