1 Basic Lab Techniques

2 A. Meterstick Measure your lab book in inches and centimeters
Mathematically convert inches to centimeters Show your work! Determine area of your lab notebook

3

4 B. Graduated Cylinder Determine the volume of water in the graduated cylinder sitting out. Determine the volume of water contained in your largest test tube.

5

6 C. Thermometer Calibration
Set 250mL beaker on hotplate, ~half full of DI water Periodically check temperature Carefully stick thermometer in the water without touching the beaker walls Record b.p. Place 50mL of ice in a 250mL beaker and cover with DI water. Located against the wall Wait 15 minutes for equilibration Record temperature Record b.p.

7 C. Thermometer Calibration
Determine true boiling point at the observed atmospheric pressure. CURRENT PATM = inHg (e ) 𝑏.𝑝. π‘π‘œπ‘Ÿπ‘Ÿπ‘’π‘π‘‘π‘–π‘œπ‘›= 760π‘šπ‘šπ»π‘”βˆ’ 𝑃 π‘Žπ‘‘π‘š βˆ—(0.037 °𝐢 π‘šπ‘š ) This will be the value used to correct part D (d) True b.p. = 100.0Β°C – b.p. correction Graph observed temperatures vs. true temperatures Title graph, label x-axis and y-axis, scale the axes

8 D. Calibration of Pipet Obtain 40mL of DI water in 150mL beaker
Weigh empty, dry 50mL Erlenmeyer flask Tare the balance Record the temperature of the water on lab Pipet exactly 10mL of water into the flask Weigh flask with water Determine the volume of your pipet

9 D. Calibration of Pipet 𝑑= π‘š 𝑣 Units: liquids: 𝑔 π‘šπΏ π‘ π‘œπ‘™π‘–π‘‘π‘ : 𝑔 π‘π‘š 3

12 E. Density of Antifreeze
Weigh dry 50mL flask Record mass Pipet 10mL antifreeze into flask Record mass of flask with antifreeze Repeat Calculate density of antifreeze

13

14 Summary Post lab questions due with lab Work in groups of two or three
Turn in one lab report for the group Answer the post lab questions individually and attach all to the lab report Take all measurements and readings Do calculations last or out of lab
