Environmental Profiles Data Release: BRE Global’s proposed approach
Introduce yourself and what you do Jane Anderson BREEAM Materials, BRE Global 9th February 2010
2
Background Commitment to make LCA data available
Licensing of BBA to undertake Certified Environmental Profiles Increasing numbers of industry tools based on ICE data, rather than cradle to grave LCA data from UK industry Increasing requests from consultants to obtain data for use in internal tools Requests from companies for data to “cross check” BRE Environmental Profiles and Green Guide with other LCA work Integrity of Green Guide called into question BRE need to increase functionality and understanding of data behind Green Guide Online
3
Approach Levels of Data Levels of Transparency
Levels of Confidentiality Levels of Access Levels of Knowledge Validation of Users Validation of Tools and Approach
4
Factory Data – annual production figures
Factory Data, eg. Outputs: 21,539 tonnes Inputs: 17,090 tonnes sand 5,209 tonnes cement 1,209 kWh Electricity 403 therms Natural Gas Emissions: 179 g NMVOC BRE will never make this data available to anyone, unless at your request
5
Factory data – per tonne Unit Process
Outputs: 1 tonne Inputs: 0.793 tonnes sand 0.242 tonnes cement kWh Electricity therms Natural Gas Emissions: 8.31 mg NMVOC presentation BRE will never make this data available to anyone, unless at your request
6
Factory data – per tonne System Process
Resources Aluminium, 24% in bauxite, 11% in crude ore, in ground in ground 2.7725E-08 kg Anhydrite, in ground 5.2097E-12 Barite, 15% in crude ore, in ground 1.1424E-09 Basalt, in ground 1.4389E-10 Borax, in ground 6.8577E-12 Emissions to air Acenaphthene high. pop. 9.247E-15 Acetaldehyde 2.7931E-10 Acetic acid 2.2523E-10 2.379E-09 Acetone 2.2547E-10 low. pop. 1.6847E-10 Acrolein 1.1332E-13 2.079E-13 Actinides, radioactive, unspecified 4.8461E-10 Bq Outputs: 1 tonne Lists all resources and emissions to the system, cradle to gate Normally about 300+ items presentation BRE will never make this data available to anyone, unless at your request
7
Factory Data BRE will never publish or share any factory level data unless: Manufacturer requests it Data is Certified and used as a specific input to another product being modelled by another Environmental Profiles Provider – we will provide per tonne system process data
8
Generic data – per tonne Unit Process
Mass weighted Outputs: 1 tonne Inputs: 0.769 tonnes sand 0.238 tonnes cement kWh Electricity therms Natural Gas Emissions: 5.31 mg NMVOC presentation BRE will never make this data available to anyone, unless at TA request
9
Generic data – per tonne System Process
Outputs: 1 tonne Resources: 0.8 tonnes sand and gravel extraction 0.315 tonnes limestone extraction 0.02 tonnes coal extraction 0.03 m3 Natural Gas extraction 7.3 litres surface water extraction Emissions: 573 g Carbon dioxide 2.9 g methane 4 g NOx 10.3 mg NMVOC… presentation BRE have to make this data available to BBA and want to release to others
10
Generic data: System Process Data
BBA and any other Environmental Profiles Providers have to have access to your Generic Data for input materials System Process data allows them to understand the causes of impact for input materials so that they can advise clients BRE can ensure licence prevents use for any other purpose Bath ICE data would need Carbon Dioxide and CO2 equivalent data for inclusion within their database, together with EPD report Any other release: only if Trade Association requests it
11
Generic data – per tonne characterised data
BRE want to use this data within BRE tools such as Green Guide, Envest, IMPACT etc BRE want to release CC data to ICE (Bath) BRE want to release this data to those who want access to LCA data for construction products for consultancy and in-house tools BRE could manage requests and ensure cradle to grave LCA data is used BRE could “validate” those wanting to use this data to ensure they understand LCA and how to use data correctly BRE could “validate” internal and external tools Payment would cover administration, validation and provision of other datasets, eg disposal, transport etc
12
Green Guide Online: Green Guide Expert
Green Guide Online: BRE want to provide breakdowns for listed specifications as a subscription service

15
Development of Green Guide Online
Green Guide Publication already provides Embodied CO2 Service Life Recycled Content (kg and % by mass) Recycled currently at EOL (%) Service will be subscription only Annual Cost will be more than purchase cost of Green Guide publication Cost covers BRE Costs to develop website and provide other data (transport, end of life, other datasets) If significant profit then this will be discussed with the BRE Global Governance Board to consider future action (reinvestment in tools, reduced cost for profiles or reduced cost for access?)
16
IMPACT: TSB Design and Decision Tools Call
Basically Envest integrated with CAD models Will provide Cradle to Grave Embodied data for whole building IES undertaking software development for Phase 1 Links to Google SketchUp (early design) Links to various CAD/BIM packages (detailed design) Links to IES operational energy models Overseas Versions using overseas databases Delivery within 18 months Phase 2: AEC3 – IFC compliant protocol for development of IMPACT by any other software developer/BIM package Phase 2: Provision of IMPACT UK database for validated software
17
Certificated Environmental Profiles
Certificated data can be used in certificated Profiles where certificated input is used BBA now licensed to undertake Certification of Environmental Profiles BRE reviewing Cross Listing with other EPD schemes European EPDs are mainly cradle to gate
18
Next Steps BRE will be in contact with each Trade Association or manufacturer who have provided data Letter will set out levels of data which A: BRE have to release to operate the Environmental Profiles Certification Scheme B: BRE want to release BRE will give you the opportunity to opt out of release In the absence permission for any level, BRE will: Publish contact details for users to apply for permission Discuss with you what alternative data we will use where we have to provide information
