1 What is science?

2 Goals of Science Deals only with the natural world
The supernatural is outside the realm of science.

3 Collect and organize information

4 Propose explanations that can be tested.

5 In other words science is a body of knowledge that explains the natural world.

6 Science begins with observations.

7 Data is information gathered from observations
Quantitative = a quantity, an exact number or measure Qualitative = a quality, a description

8 Inference = a logical interpretation based on prior knowledge

9 Hypothesis is a proposed explanation that is testable
Purina food will reduce a dog’s shedding. Putting Miracle Grow on a plant will produce more flowers. Benzoyl peroxide will decrease acne outbreaks.

10 How Scientist Work Scientific Method Ask questions, make observations
Gather information Form a hypothesis Set up a controlled experiment Manipulated variable—the variable that is deliberately changed (aka independent variable) Responding variable—the variable that is observed (aka dependent variable) Record and analyze the results Draw a conclusion Repeat

11 Field studies and models
Field study—when nature is observed in its natural state Models—using computers or other media to make a representation of a process, idea, or structure

12 Theory vs Law Theory—a well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations. NOT ABSOLUTE! Law—a description of an observation. Ex Gravity

13 Tools and Procedures Common Measurement system (SI)
Based off the metric system which is a decimal system of measurement based off of increments of 10. Unit Tool Length Meter meter stick Volume Liter Graduated cylinder Mass Gram Balance, Scale When converting within a measurement remember: KHDBDCM

14 Temperature– measure of average kinetic energy (how hot something is)
It is measured in Celsius or °C

15 Data Analysis Data can be analyzed by a wide variety of tools Tables
Graphs Charts Drawings models
