Measuring Volume Using Liquids
2
Using a Graduated Cylinder
Do you know why cylinders are smart? Because they graduated! Be sure to have the plastic ring at the top!
3
GC con’td Meniscus – a curve in the surface of a liquid and is produced in response to the surface of the container or another object.
4
Let’s try some measurements!
5
Finding the Volume of an Irregular Shaped Solid
There are 2 methods to find the volume!!
6
Method 1 Add water to a graduated cylinder. Record the measurement.
Add the object to the cylinder. Subtract the smaller number from the larger number. Viola! The difference is the volume of the irregular object!
7
Method 2 Place a beaker into a container larger enough to catch some over flow. Fill the beaker to the top with water. Add the irregular object to the beaker. The beaker will overflow, and that is what you want! Carefully remove the beaker, and pour the overflow in the container into a graduated cylinder Record the measurement in the cylinder!!
