2 Reminders… *Positive behavior checklist continues!!! First 8th grade class to five checks gets a positive behavior party!!! *Kickboard will continue to be used to record individual behaviors. Participation in extra curricular activities are dependent on your behavior. Positive points will be rewarded by being able to shop at the school store on Friday’s!!

5 Americans have faced prejudice in the past, can anyone describe how any groups have faced prejudice in the past? (Turn and talk) Some examples of Americans facing prejudice in the past is, not giving people a chance to go to desired schools, having an equal chance at job opportunities, or moving into a certain neighborhood.

6 What are some methods people use to gain their rights
What are some methods people use to gain their rights? People protested, marched, worked for new legislation, or used the support of respected public figures.

7 During the 1800’s, the majority of Americans were white Protestants who were born in the United States. Many believed that the United States should remain a white, protestant nation. Nonwhite, non protestant, and non-native residents often faced discrimination. Using context clues, can anyone define discrimination for us?

8 Discrimination is unequal treatment because of race, religion, ethnic background, or place of birth. The government did little to fight discrimination in this era.

9 Guided Practice As a class, students will popcorn read a passage titled, “Discrimination against Catholics/Anti-Semitism” and answer the following comprehension questions Describe the “APA” Why did Jews from Eastern Europe face more discrimination than those from Central or Western Europe?

10 Independent Practice Students will independently read a passage titled, “Anti-Asian Policies/Discrimination Against African Americans” and answer the following comprehension questions. What kind of discrimination did Asians face, and what was the mindset behind it? What kind of discrimination did African Americans face?

11 Group Work You will be presented with an image titled, “Catholic Immigrants” and be asked to answer the following comprehension questions in your groups. Group 1- Summarize this image in your own words Group 2- Why did people discriminate against this group? Group 3- What role did the American Protective Association play in the discrimination of Catholics? Group 4- State at least 2 other examples of discrimination other than the one depicted in this image that was discussed during this lesson

12 Homework In a 5-7 sentence paragraph, describe what problems members of ethnic and religious groups faced during this time period in America
