The 2nd Revolutionary War
War of 1812 The 2nd Revolutionary War
2
Journal For example: March, 1805
You are a member of the Corps of Discovery. You are currently one year into the expedition. Write a journal explaining what one day is like on the journey west. (1/2 page) For example: March, 1805 Today has been a difficult day. It has been raining continuously and we are pushing into the headstrong current of the mighty Mississippi River. Sometimes I feel that this is an undertaking that will eventually take us, I am somehow motivated to keep going for our fearless leaders, Captains Clark and Lewis…………..
3
Jefferson’s Legacy Jefferson struggled with foreign affairs and the eminent threat of war during his 2nd term as president Problems arose with Britain and France He endured the final years, hoping to be free from the heavy burden of the office He would be succeeded by James Madison
4
James Madison He and Jefferson formed the Democratic-Republican Party He was an author of the Federalist Papers He is known as the “Father of the Constitution” and Bill of Rights (with Jefferson) Favored the 3/5 Compromise and owned slaves on a large plantation Secretary of State for Jefferson He would lead us through the War of 1812 and wanted to purge the US of British influence
5
Causes of War of 1812 The British and French had been fighting for years: Napoleonic Wars and both sides had continued to harass US ships Jefferson had imposed an embargo on both countries, but US economy suffered as a result (would ultimately sour the last years of Jefferson’s presidency) Trade had been severely limited
6
Causes (continued) Britain was continuing to assert itself here and with the defeat of Napoleon, escalated its expansion and attempts to unite Native American tribes under their control (and areas in Canada which the US wanted) Impressment: kidnapping of US sailors and forcing into Royal Navy
7
Birth of an American Identity
War of 1812 was more about the growth of America from infancy to adulthood It was a war for our national identity as a powerful, sovereign country We wanted to show Britain that we had to be treated with respect and dignity Old grudges were meant to be settled from the Revolutionary War Assertion of American rights! Nationalism
8
Key Issues US v. Great Britain Lasted approximately 3 years
Causes: trade restrictions, impressment of US sailors into the British Navy, and British support of Native Americans who were fighting expansion, attacks on US ships, and US hopes of eventually taking Canada
9
Where Was It Fought At sea, naval battles along Atlantic coast, privateers attacked each other, British violations of US rights Land, all the way to the northern Great Lakes area to border of Canada South: Gulf Coast area, Battle of New Orleans (During the War of 1812, Washington DC was burned by the British)
10
End of War Both sides occupied each other’s territory, but more symbolic than anything Treaty of Ghent restored each side’s land, but the US had asserted its new power and felt very powerful and successful in proving to the British that we were a force to be dealt with Canada felt quite powerful as well and had fought off several US attacks
11
Legacy of the War of 1812 Americans’ confidence was boosted!
US enters into a period called the “Era of Good Feelings”, bipartisanship ended, overall happiness, satisfaction with the government prevailed Star Spangled Banner, National Anthem by Francis Scott Key 1931 Hoover: officially became National Anthem Was written after the bombardment of Ft. McHenry during the War of 1812 Inspirational/great resolve of Americans
