2. Emancipation Proclamation
Proclamation issued by Lincoln declared that as of January 1863, all slaves living in states that had rebelled against the United States were free.
The Proclamation had the following results:
* It made the destruction of slavery a Northern
war aim.
* It discouraged interference of foreign
governments.
* It made the use of black troops a viable
option for the North

3. Gettysburg Address
In November 1863, President Lincoln dedicated a cemetery at the Gettysburg battlefield.
Lincoln described the Civil War as a struggle to preserve a nation that was dedicated to the proposition that
* “all men are created equal” and
* that was ruled by a government “of the
people, by the people, and for the
people.”

John Wilkes Booth was a Confederate sympathizer
Had originally planned to kidnap Lincoln in March, but that plan failed

9. April 14, 1865
Booth and his fellow conspirators planned to kill Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of State William Seward
Only Lincoln’s assassination was “successful”
