read authors of the Renaissance.3 As professor in Basle this true polymath taught Hebrew, Theology, Geography, Astronomy and Mathematics. His copious Cosmographia,first publishedi n Germani n I544, contains a descrip-tion of all countries and peoples, their laws and institutions. This work, which also appeared in Latin, French and Italian translations,4 was one of the standard encyclopaedias for the layman right through the I7th and even in the I8th century This is one of his woodcuts reused by Johan Herold. Note that they have aquired underwear!!
