Bloodborne Pathogens And Emergency Procedures

2 Definition: Pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood or other potentially infectious materials and can cause disease in humans Pathogens include but are not limited to: Hepatitis B HIV: Human immunodeficiency virus Bloodborne Pathogens

3 OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Association) estimates 5
OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Association) estimates 5.6 million workers in health care and other facilities are at risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens such as HIV and Hepatitis B. Why are we concerned?

4 Universal Precautions
An approach to infection control to treat all human blood and certain human body fluids as if they were known to be infectious for HIV, HBV, and other bloodborne pathogens. Universal Precautions

5 What body fluids are problematic?
Semen, vaginal secretions, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, pericardial fluid, peritoneal fluid, amniotic fluid, saliva in dental procedures, any body fluid that is contaminated with blood, and all body fluids in situations where it’s hard to determine which body fluid it is WHICH BODY FLUID ISNT LISTED?? What body fluids are problematic?

PPE Gloves Gowns Face shields/Masks Eye protection Mouthpieces Personal Protective Equipment

7 Wash your hands frequently, especially after removing gloves.
20 seconds with warm soapy water If no water is available use hand sanitizer Hand Hygiene

8 Infection Control Keep training room clean and sanitized
Change pillow cases Immediately clean up any blood or body fluids and sanitize the area appropriately 1:10 Bleach:Water cleaner Frequent hand washing Avoid cross contamination Infection Control

9 Dispose of items with blood or body fluids in the proper receptacle
Biohazard bag or biohazard waste bin Properly dispose of sharps NEVER recap sharps Place in sharps container Regulated Waste

10 If you feel you have been exposed to blood or body fluids without the use or proper use of PPE, let me know immediately. Exposure

11 In an emergency situation, you as student aide will have a role in the emergency action plan
“Responsible for assisting AT as directed: Attending to injured athlete Calling EMS Meeting EMS at designated location Retrieving emergency contact forms or equipment” Emergency Procedures

12 Very important that you know and are familiar with the locations of emergency equipment:
AED Splints CPR Mask Blood spill kit Crutches & Wheel Chair Helmet Kit Emergency Contact Forms Emergency Procedures

13 Site Specific Emergency Action Plan
Each practice and/or game location on campus has specific directions for EMS to that location. These maps are located in the emergency action plan as well as posted at each location. It is important that you know this information Site Specific Emergency Action Plan

14 Emergency Action Plan Competency
In your groups, write an emergency action plan giving step-by-step directions for each area listed. Keep in mind: Nearest entrance to location Stairs or other barriers to entrance Size of emergency vehicles USE CARDINAL DIRECTIONS (not Left/Right) Emergency Action Plan Competency
