What does energy conservation mean?
Feb. 1, 2017 Kinetic Energy Bell Ringer What does energy conservation mean? How would you explain conservation of energy in an object such as a balloon or a light switch?
2
Standards and Objectives
GLE Analyze various types of energy Review of previous matter standards I can- SPI Interpret the relationship between potential and kinetic energy. SPI Recognize that energy can be transformed from one type to another.
3
Kinetic Energy Kinetic energy is the energy of an object due to its motion. Kinetic energy exists on many scales. Forms of kinetic energy include heat, electricity, sound, and the motion of objects and many other forms.
4
Kinetic Based on what we learned Monday about potential energy, how do kinetic energy and potential energy compare? What makes them similar or different? Make a chart in your composition book so that you can take notes.
5
Let’s Discuss What we have learned this week about energy
Using your white boards, you will answer each question as it appears on the screen. GOOD LUCK!!!!!
6
ex: flying rocket, student walking, book falling.
Define and give an example of kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is energy of motion. ex: flying rocket, student walking, book falling. Define and give an example of potential energy. Potential energy is energy that is stored as a result of position or shape. ex: stretched guitar string
7
What is gravitational potential energy?
Gravitational potential energy is potential energy that depends upon an object’s height above ground.
8
b. Potential Energy What is mechanical energy?
Energy you measure when you observe motion and position of an object. List two types of mechanical energy. a. Kinetic Energy b. Potential Energy
9
List six other kinds of energy and give an example of each.
a. Thermal (Heat) – running engine of a car. b. Chemical – burning gasoline, burning candle. c. Electrical – appliances. d. Electromagnetic – x-rays. e. Nuclear – nuclear power plants, splitting an atom. f. Light (Solar) – plants use for photosynthesis. g. Geothermal - geysers
10
State the law of conservation of energy.
Energy cannot be created or destroyed – it can be converted from one form to another.
11
Describe the changes in energy that occur as a rock falls off a cliff
Describe the changes in energy that occur as a rock falls off a cliff. Use the terms potential and kinetic energy in your description. A drawing might be useful. At the top of a hill the rock has potential energy. As it falls, its potential energy changes to kinetic energy. At the bottom of the hill it’s back to potential energy.
12
Which has more potential energy, an orange at the top of a tree or one in the lower branches?
The orange at the top has more potential energy because it is higher off the ground. 10. You are coasting uphill on your bicycle. What happens to the kinetic energy that you lose as your speed decreases near the top of the hill? Kinetic energy changes to potential energy.
13
Summarizer A book sliding across a desk loses all its kinetic energy, and comes to rest. The book feels slightly warm. Was energy conserved? Explain your answer. Energy was conserved where kinetic energy changed to potential energy and thermal energy.
