1 1. Multiplying by 10,100,1000 Shortcut?S Add one 0 Multiply by 10
Add two 0’s Add three 0’s since 10 has one 0 since 100 has two 0’s since 1000 has three 0’s

2 So how do we work these out?
730 ÷ 10 = 73 ( a zero was removed) b) ÷ 100 = ( two zeros were removed) c) ÷ 1000 = (three zeros were removed) Because division is the opposite of multiplication

3 L.O. To be able to divide whole numbers by 10,100 and 1000
By the end of the lesson, we will be able to: divide any whole number by 10, 100, 1000 divide any whole number by multiples of 10,100,1000

4 What if the number does NOT
For numbers ending in 0 Divide by 10 Divide by 100 Divide by 1000 Remove one 0 Remove two 0s Remove three 0s since 10 has one 0 since 100 has two 0’s since 1000 has three 0’s What if the number does NOT end in 0’s ??

5 2. Dividing whole numbers with remainders
27÷5= 5 𝑟 2 𝑜𝑟 5.4 𝑜𝑟 5 2 5 34÷8= 4 𝑟 2 𝑜𝑟 4.25 𝑜𝑟 4 2 8

6 So how do we work these out?
18 ÷ 10 = 1 r 8 or 1.8 b) 374 ÷ 10 = 37 r 4 or 37.4 c) 257 ÷ 100 = 2 r 57 or 2.57 d) ÷ 1000 = 81 r 352 or What’s the Pattern? At this point explain how for a whole number the DECIMAL POINT IS HIDDEN AT THE END

7 For numbers NOT ending in 0
Divide by 10 Divide by 100 Divide by 1000 Move decimal point to the left once Move decimal point to the left twice Move decimal point to the left three times since 10 has one 0 since 100 has two 0’s since 1000 has three 0’s

8 Examples 23 ÷10 = 2 3 = ÷ 100 = = = 250

9 Examples 12350 ÷ 1000 = = ÷ 100 = 2 4 = 0.24 HERE EXPLAIN THAT THE DECIMAL POINT DOESN’T LIKE BEING ALONE SO WE PUT A 0 IN FRONT OF IT

10 2500 ÷ 500 Explain cancelling 0s method  zeroes are cancelled in pairs

11 Summary: steps to success
By 10? Move point once to make the number smaller 2. By 100? Move point twice to make the number smaller By 1000? Move the point three times to make the number smaller 4. By a multiple of 10,100,1000? Put numbers on top of each other, cancel pairs of zeros

12 Answers ÷ 10

13 Answers ÷ 100

14 Answers ÷ 1000

15 Multiples of 10,100,1000 = 2 40 ÷ 20 4800 ÷ 600 56000 ÷ 800 = 8 = 70

16 L.O. To be able to divide whole numbers by 10,100 and 1000
INVENT A QUESTION for these two points divide any whole number by 10, 100, 1000 divide any whole number by multiples of 10,100,1000
