About Charlie Strengths: Math, puzzles, manipulatives, creative, participation, good at segmenting words and sight words Challenges: Reading comprehension and fluency, spelling Frustrations: impulsivity (calling out), fidgety, plays with instruments at desk, easily distracts himself, desires lots of attention
4
About Charlie Cont. Often needs to ask clarifying questions (especially with words he can’t read- ex: Ms. G what does that word say? Do Now’s) Gets really frustrated if he’s trying to participate but doesn’t get a chance So excited when he understands something and works really hard (loves praise for this!) Understands that education is important and is driven by this (and his cousin NSW grad)
6
Thoughts on NSW I Iike this school way more than my old school - “my teachers didn’t listen to me, there was too many kids” (has had negative past with teachers) I really like the longer days, I don’t want to be home bored and I don’t want to be hanging out on the street I love that we get class names and I love the team sports here - sports help get my energy out
7
Thoughts on NSW Cont. Used to take meds, not since NSW, likes not taking them Not used to sitting for such a long time, kind of difficult Likes that it’s all boys – girls tell on you for everything Likes that we buy them materials Used to have stress balls at old school, has them at home, likes to fidget and move around a lot
8
Thoughts on School Math!!! (especially iPad math games) Science
Likes: Math!!! (especially iPad math games) Science The new classes at NSW that he had never heard of before Field Trips Hands on activities
9
Thoughts on School Cont.
Still working on reading, used to have a teacher at his old school who he would work with one on one Trying to get better at drawing (“my brother’s a really awesome drawer”) Really doesn’t like Spanish – it’s hard
10
Accommodations NSW is a great place for him – more personalized attention – has some negative influences in his life Has met a few times with our Reading Specialist – says he is very excited about reading and new books despite the challenge Very active participant in the small groups she has had him in Receives spelling help Mondays with 5th grade lead teacher
11
Accommodations Cont. Teachers are great at quietly redirecting him
Small reminders go a long way for him Often allowing him to participate, but also moving on even if he is upset that he didn’t get a chance Great at giving him moving roles in the classroom Good at small groups Preferential seating Allowing him to stand at desk if he needs
12
What I Can Do LOTS of positive reinforcement when doing the right thing Checking in with him during an assignment (especially if he’s doing what he should be doing) Also using Exit Slips to see where he’s at Visual cues to remind him to raise his hand or pay attention Providing breaks when needed Reading Do Now’s and directions out loud Giving him the chance to move around (collect things, pass things out, be the expert on hands on activities/help others)
13
What I Can Do Cont. Incorporate small group work frequently
Put him in a seat near the front with focused guys Allow him to help others when he has mastered a skill
