Statutory Requirements To compare and group together different types of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties To describe in simple terms how fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped within rock To recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter Non-Statutory Guidance To explore different types of rock found within the local environment (cross-curricular links with Geography)

We have been finding out which rocks are permeable and let water soak into them.

Scratch testing rocks: Investigating the strength of chalk, limestone, slate marble and granite

Did you know that igneous rock is lava from a volcano that has cooled down?
Here are some volcanoes that we made as part of our homework project about rocks. Some year 3 pupils have used vinegar and baking soda to make their volcanoes erupt and explode!
