Machine-to-machine exchange of energy data with customer authorization 2009: Federal Smart Grid Policy Framework sought standards, interoperability, smart meter deployment 2009 – 2014: NIST, DOE, utilities and others develop GB standard 2014: Ratified as NAESB REQ.21 “Energy Service Provider Interface” standard 2015: Green Button Alliance nonprofit established as independent testing and certification authority
