2 Leading Up to a War Some of the other countries gaining independence such as America and France inspired Mexico to also fight for their freedom. What really started New Spain's (Mexico's) fight for freedom was Napoleon and his conquest for Spain. Father Hidalgo was the first to speak out for independence.

3 The Beginning Father Hidalgo was the first to speak out for independence. He always questioned authority before this. Examples: - Investigated for teaching literature in his home - Also had invited mixed races in his home He helped plan the rebellion.

4 Continuance of the Revolution
Father Hidalgo rang a bell on September 16,1810. Called people together as he delivered a speech. He wanted the low class to fight for their freedom in Mexico. “Death to bad government and death to Spaniards!” He was loyal to Spain, he wanted people to rebel against peninsulares, not the country. Captured and Killed

5 José María Morelos Creole Priest

7 Momentum Shift Royalists : People loyal to the Spanish king.
1820- Spanish authorities asked creole royalists, Agustín de Iturbide, to lead a final battle against the revolutionaries. Meanwhile, a liberal revolution was taking place in Spain and Iturbide believed this revolution may take away some of his power. The power threat forced Iturbide to switch sides and fight alongside the Mexican Revolutionaries.

8 Three-Part Proposal Iturbide made a three-part proposal to the leader of the revolutionaries. Part 1: When Mexico gained independence, it would be ruled by a monarch. Part 2: Creoles and Peninsulares would have equal rights. Part 3: The official church of Mexico would be the Roman Catholic Church.

9 Mexico Gains Independence
Compromise made after 10 years of war. Royalists and rebel troops joining together helped Mexico gain their Independence from Spain. 1821- Mexico officially declared its independence from Spain. Iturbide became the first emperor of Mexico.
